Either Commersonia bartramia or Commersonia macrostipulata (both closely related).
Different sized stipules provides the initial diagnostic feature to observe, check and photograph, for distinguishing these two species.

Spring is Here! What is alive?

Hello everyone who has cabin fever and is finally getting out of doors. It is so rewarding to feel the sun and reach for it like the plants are doing.

Well, although our hike to Whipple Creek was cool, it was not wet, nor snowy. but it was cold enough to keep the oso berry blossoms tucked inside. I have since seen many blooming, as is evidence by our list of observations.

Please continue to gather some GREEN as St. Patrick's Day and the official start of SPRING arriv...

Swamp Things BioBlitz Spotlight Species #7

Spotlight Species #7:
Eastern river cooter (Pseudemys concinna concinna)

What to Look For:
The eastern river cooter is often confused for the yellow-bellied slider. These two species look very similar. They are both black and yellow, but there are some good ways to tell them apart.
While both have yellow bellies, the yellow-bellied slider is ALL yellow while the eastern river cooter’s belly will have black pigments. The eastern river cooter has...

Note to all members of what was previously the "Lichens of Ohio" project -

This project will now be serving as an extension of Ohio Moss and Lichen Association where we will use the data to better understand lichens and bryophytes in Ohio. In addition to including all lichenized, lichenicolous, and allied fungal taxa, this project will now also be aggregating observations of mosses, liverworts, and hornworts! Social Behaviors and Phenology Field Journal 4

I was walking to the bus stop from Redstone when I heard a Tufted Titmouse call. I know that Im suppose to go out and purposefully look for them and all of that, but I saw an opportunity. I was able to hear a Tufted Titmouse but I wasnt really able to see the bird. After a while looking for the bird, I was able to hear another titmouse, but again, I wasnt able to see them. From standing there and hearing them, I was able to tell that the birds were moving around and they called. After a...

Issid month #3 Issidflage

While most issids seem to blend with tree bark or branches, there are some that take camouflage to the next level - And Issus lauri is the perfect example! It looks like a leaf instead, and is found in Europe. It's small, less then 1.5 cm long, which also lets it drink plant's sap without being noticed by predators easily. But it's camouflage isn't perfect, as the veins on the wings and the legs, head, thorax, abdomen, are coloured peach and eyes dark red in most specimens, there are som...

Species of the Week Number 25: Western Honey Bee

Last week we featured a Cherry Plum Tree - because it was the first tree in Meanwood to blossom. Since then not only have two of its branches crashed down under the weight of snow but, when things warmed up, the white flowers became a massive magnet for honey bees. In the warmer days this week it has been covered in hundreds of bees that have just woken up from their winter hibernation.

Bee society is not an equal one. All of the bees harvesting on the tree pollen are fe...

Martes

Podalyria - ID key from Podalyria project

Key to species of Podalyria
KEY TO THE SPECIES
The species are often hard to identify because many features are variable. To identify species, flowers, buds, and particularly bracts must be photographed.

Bracts are crucial, but in many species the bracts are shed, which poses a problem.
The length of the flower stalk relative to leaves is often useful, but must be for open flowers as it changes as the flowers open.
Leaf shape and size is not really useful, because...
